Why You Might Be Having A Hard Time Learning New Skills

Whether you are trying to navigate PhotoShop or trying a hand at public speaking, learning a new skill is not only a great addition to your resume, but it can also be both therapeutic and confidence-boosting. However, that doesn’t mean that learning new skills can’t be tricky. Here are three things you can do to help you finally pick up that skill you’ve been working on.

Too Much on Your Plate

Everyone has a limit. One of the reasons why you may be struggling picking up a new skill is that you are not respecting your limit and setting reasonable expectations for yourself. Putting too much on your plate is the fastest way to fill your life with unnecessary stress, and too much stress keeps you from learning new skills effectively.

Before you give up on learning a new skill, sit down and make a list with two columns: things that need to be done and things that I want to do. You should be completely honest with yourself during this process. Hopefully, you will begin to realize what ‘wants’ or even ‘needs’ are taking up too much time in your life. Eliminate or minimize those duties to give you more time for what is most important. Also, don’t feel that you need to learn all skills at one. Pick one and focus on that.

Learning Styles

No two people are born the same. Everyone has a different learning style. And if you aren’t sure what your learning style is, then it will be very difficult for you to learn a new skill. If you are feeling that the new skill isn’t clicking with you, it is probably because you aren’t applying the subject matter to your best method of learning.

For example, there are some tips and tricks you can use to make online learning more your speed, but you need to make it fit with your learning style. So, if you want to learn how to work photoshop or code programs, then you should not only look for a quality source of instruction, but also one that works well with your learning style. This might include more auditory elements, hands-on practice, or visual elements depending on what you need to succeed.

Lacking Confidence

It is amazing what the mind is capable of. There have been multiple studies that show when a person is self-degrading or doesn’t believe she or he can accomplish something, she or he experiences greater difficulty in accomplishing difficult tasks. But this doesn’t have to be you. Maybe, the only thing keeping you from learning this new skill is your attitude. Try to believe in yourself more. You can do it!

Learning a new skill can be both fun and daunting. But if you feel like you are struggling to pick up this new skill, there are plenty of things to try before you give up. Plus, remember that failures are just steps to greater success in the future.
