[An exciting glimpse into the world of the Silent Guardians Space Adventure series]
Ghost Station
Zara’s skin prickled as she stepped onto the derelict space station. The air felt wrong, charged with an energy that set her teeth on edge. She glanced at Kel, his green skin barely visible in the emergency lighting.
“I don’t like this,” she whispered, her voice sounding too loud in the empty corridor.
Kel nodded, his warm brown eyes scanning the shadows. “Stay alert. Watch each other’s backs.”
Nova’s silver hair shimmered as she consulted her handheld scanner. “The energy readings are off the charts. Whatever happened here, it wasn’t natural.”
Zephyr growled, his purple head-flap rippling with agitation. “Just say the word if you need me.” The thwack of his fist into his palm let them know exactly what he meant.
They moved deeper into the station, passing abandoned workstations and belongings strewn about as if their owners had vanished while working. Zara reached out with her mind, searching for any trace of the missing crew.
“Nothing,” Exy’s voice whispered in her mind. “It’s like they were never here.”
Zara suppressed a shudder.
A sudden burst of static from their comms made them all jump. Through the interference, the Director’s voice crackled to life. “Team, we’ve detected a massive energy surge heading your way. Get out of there now!”
Before they could react, a blinding light engulfed them. Zara felt a wrenching sensation, as if reality was tearing itself apart. When the light faded, she found herself alone in a pristine version of the corridor they had just been exploring.
“Kel? Nova? Zephyr?” she called out, her voice steady despite the panic rising in her chest.
“They’re gone,” Exy said, its usual playfulness replaced by concern. “But not gone-gone. It’s like… they’re out of sync.”
Zara took a deep breath, centering herself. “Okay, think. What could cause this?”
As if in answer, a shimmering figure materialized before her. It was humanoid but constantly shifting, as if struggling to maintain its form.
“Help us,” the figure’s voice echoed, sounding both near and impossibly distant. “You must… stabilize… the nexus.”
Zara took a step back. “Who are you? What’s happening here?”
“No time,” the figure flickered. “Station… keystone… reality fracturing. You must… reactivate.”
Before Zara could respond, the station shuddered violently. Through the viewport, she saw space ripple and tear.
“It’s telling the truth,” Exy chimed in. “I can feel the destabilization. It’s… terrifying.”
“What do we need to do?” Zara asked, pushing aside her confusion and focusing on the task at hand.
The figure pointed down the corridor. “Main control… through there. Reactivate… but beware. Defenses… see you as intruder.”
As if on cue, a high-pitched whine filled the air. Laser turrets emerged from hidden panels in the walls, targeting Zara and the mysterious figure.
“Run!” the figure shouted, its form dissipating.
Zara sprinted down the corridor, dodging laser blasts that left scorch marks on the walls. She felt Exy’s presence surge within her, enhancing her reflexes and allowing her to anticipate the turrets’ firing patterns.
She burst into the control room, slamming the door shut behind her. Zara immediately went to work on the main console, eyeing the door nervously as the sound of approaching security drones grew louder.
“How much time do we have?” she muttered to herself.
“Not enough,” Exy replied grimly. “The reactivation sequence is incredibly complex. We need more time.”
Zara felt a familiar warmth in her mind as Exy continued. *We can buy that time, but it’s risky. We’ll have to fully merge our consciousness with the station’s systems.”
“Do it,” Zara said without hesitation.
She closed her eyes, feeling Exy’s presence expand within her. The world fell away as her awareness spread throughout the station. She could feel every system, every circuit. With a thought, she redirected power, rerouted security protocols, and began the complex dance of reactivation.
In what felt like both an eternity and an instant, it was done. Zara opened her eyes to find reality shimmering around her.
She felt the familiar wrenching sensation, and suddenly she was back in the darkened corridor with her team, all of them looking dazed and confused.
“What just happened?” Nova asked, her tone sardonic.
Kel placed a steadying hand on Zara’s shoulder. “Are you alright? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
Zara managed a weak smile. “I’m fine. But I think we just prevented something terrible.”
As they made their way back to their ship, Zara’s mind raced. The mysterious figure, the station’s importance, the threat to reality itself… There was so much more going on than she had ever imagined. And at the center of it all was Exy. Her firend was more powerful than she realised. Just to be able to integrate with alien technology like that? She didn’t know what to think. Mixed emotion of gratitiude, fear, relief.
“We did good, didn’t we?” Exy said, its childlike enthusiasm returning.
Zara allowed herself a small smile. “We did,” she thought back. “But something tells me it’s not over.”
As the team’s ship detached from the station and inputted the next coordinates, Zara gazed out at the stars. The mystery of Exy was going to have to wait for another day.
